Weird Religion | Week 7 | Social Order Subversion
“Modern society-it’s institutions, its sciences and its ways of life-was dictated by a gardening state bent on eradicating and uprooting all the weeds in order to replace them with beautiful flowers planted in beautifully landscaped flower beds.” – Zygmunt Bauman
“The distinction of ranks and the gradations of dignity must be preserved with the utmost care, lest the humble, emboldened by equality, should rise up against their superiors, or the superiors, degraded by the admixture of the base- born, should fall from their high estate. For it is of the utmost importance to the welfare of the State that the boundaries between the orders be kept inviolate.”. - Mary Beard
I am grateful to fortune for three things:
First, that I was born a human, and not a beast
Second, a man and not a woman
Third, a Greek and not a Barbarian
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has not made me a Gentile.
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has not made me slave.
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has not made me a woman.
“Male is by nature superior, and female inferior; and the one rules, and the other is ruled; this principle, of necessity, extends to all mankind.”
“This situation seemed to demand serious consultation, especially in view of the large number of people falling into this danger. A great many persons of every age, of every social class, men and women alike, are being brought in for trial, and this seems likely to continue. It is not on the cities, but also the towns and even the country villages which are being infected with this cult-contagion...I believed it more necessary to find out what the truth was by torturing two female slaves who were called Ministrae. But I discovered nothing except a perverse and excessive superstition."
“The Christians...gather together the lowest dregs of society: the stupid little women who are easily deceived, and slaves who are naturally credulous.” - Marcos Cornelius Fronto

Galatians 3:26-28 NIV
26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
“Paul asserts that when people come to fellowship of Christ Jesus, significance is no longer to be found in being Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female. The all-embracing nature of this affirmation, its counter-cultural significance, the fact that it equally disadvantages all by equally advantaging all-these stab at the very heart of a culture sustained by people’s maintaining the right position and status. But in Christ Jesus, the One whose death and resurrection inaugurated the new creation, all things have become new; the new era has dawned.” - Dr Gordon Fee
Ephesians 2:14-16 NIV
14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
